For many, a first job out of college is a stepping-stone to future career endeavors. But every so often, employees develop a bond with their company, and the relationship lasts a lifetime.
In 1955, William “Bill” English earned an associate’s degree in mechanical engineering from Grand Rapids Community College. That summer, he joined URS at the age of 18 and has been with our Company ever since. In 2005, now a Senior Plumbing and Fire Protection Designer, Bill commemorated his 50-year anniversary with URS.
“This is a considerable achievement in any firm,” commented CEO Martin Koffel in a congratulatory letter to Bill, “but is especially valued at URS, because we are a professional services company, and our product is exclusively the skills and experience of our people.”
Bill’s 50 years of engineering experience at URS includes plumbing department management, plumbing and fire protection design and engineering, working drawings and specifications, estimating plumbing, natural gas distribution, fire protection and construction inspection.
As a long-term employee at URS, Bill has been part of our development into a global engineering and technical services leader. “Since I’ve worked with URS, I’ve been through many company name changes and milestones. It’s almost like I’ve worked for a number of different firms,” Bill said. He joined the Company under the name J & G Daverman. In the 1980s, this firm merged with Greiner, Inc., a nationally recognized architectural and engineering firm, and in 1996, Greiner merged with URS.
After a half a century on the job, Bill looks forward to continued success at URS. His dedication has helped shape the success we enjoy today.
