Ramesh Nagarajah
Project Engineer

Roseville, CA

Shortly after the devastating tsunami struck Southeast Asia, Ramesh Nagarajah, a Project Engineer in URS’ Roseville, California, office took immediate action. He spearheaded fundraising activities for two charities benefiting flood-ravaged Sri Lanka, his place of birth. But it didn’t stop there. Accompanied by his wife, Dilkushe, Ramesh headed to his homeland to aid in relief efforts.

Having already planned a vacation to his hometown of Valvettiturai at the end of January, Ramesh moved his plans up a few weeks to aid victims of one of the most destructive natural disasters in recent history.

While in Sri Lanka, Ramesh and Dilkushe visited the eastern and southern coasts of the country, which were severely devastated by the tsunami. They managed to transport a truckload of dry milk powder to Amparai (eastern Sri Lanka) to distribute to area refugee camps. While in Colombo (the capital), they volunteered with the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization, assisting them to coordinate with different non-governmental organizations and expatriate Sri Lankans residing in the U.S.
Ramesh returned with a sense of admiration for the people of the affected communities. “In spite of their tragedy, every Sri Lankan man, women and child is moved by the immediate overwhelming support and assistance they received from fellow Sri Lankans and from the international community,” he said. Ramesh commented on how uplifting it was to witness people of different nationalities, races, religions and languages working together in the most remote areas to assist the community.

Ramesh and Dilkushe are very grateful for the opportunity they had to participate in the relief effort in Sri Lanka. They encourage continuous support to the tsunami victims, as there are tremendous long-term rehabilitation needs. Furthermore, they extend their appreciation to URS for its support and contribution to the relief efforts.
