Christina Ferland, an Environmental Manager in URS’ Portland, Maine, office did none of the above, but her recent vacation turned out to be one of her most memorable. She took a “volunteer” vacation to Costa Rica as part of the Global Volunteers service program.

As Hurricane Katrina approached, Mike Patorno, a lifelong Louisiana resident headed for higher ground. Once the extent of the devastation was apparent, he rushed back home. Although access to the area was “off limits” because of flooding, downed power lines and destroyed sewage systems, Mike’s profession allowed him re-entry by parish officials—he is the Civil and Structural Department Manager in URS’ Metairie, Louisiana, office.

Shortly after the devastating tsunami struck Southeast Asia, Ramesh Nagarajah, a Project Engineer in URS’ Roseville, California, office took immediate action. He spearheaded fundraising activities for two charities benefiting flood-ravaged Sri Lanka, his place of birth. But it didn’t stop there. Accompanied by his wife, Dilkushe, Ramesh headed to his homeland to aid in relief efforts.
