With nearly 100 years of experience in the hydropower and water-resource marketplace, URS provides expertise in the planning, permitting, design and construction of dams and hydroelectric generating facilities.

We have built many of the world’s hydropower facilities, with projects in more than 20 countries providing more than 45,000 megawatts of installed hydroelectric capacity.

Our dam projects include earth and rockfill, concrete arch, mass concrete and roller-compacted concrete gravity dams, as well as hybrid dams of timber crib, steel facing and concrete walls. Our proprietary instrumentation and data management system, called DamSmart™, is used by large utilities and public agencies to assess the performance of dams.

The construction of the Hoover Dam in the 1930s is among our signature achievements. More recently, we performed services under a $705 million engineer-procure-construct contract for the award-winning San Roque Multipurpose Dam and Reservoir in the Philippines, one of the tallest earth and rock-fill dams in the world. For an upgrade of Cosseys Dam—the third largest dam in Auckland, New Zealand—we performed the risk assessment and designed major dam improvements for the facility, which provides 14 percent of the city’s water storage.

Currently, we are leading a joint venture serving as the construction contractor for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer’s 2,700-foot-long Olmsted Dam on the Ohio River in Illinois—one of the busiest stretches of U.S. inland commercial navigation—and we are providing design services for a new dam that will replace the seismically vulnerable Calaveras Dam, which is part of San Francisco’s water supply system.
