Richard Simonetta to Join URS

COLUMBUS, OH —  November 12, 2009 —  Richard Simonetta will be joining URS Corporation. He will serve as Vice President and National Director of High Speed Rail.

Mr. Simonetta will direct the company’s high speed rail transit practice nationwide. URS is currently working on several high speed rail efforts, including providing design services for two segments of California’s High-Speed Rail Program. He will be based in the company’s Columbus, Ohio, office.

Mr. Simonetta is a transit industry veteran with more than 38 years of experience in all facets of the industry, from small- and medium-sized bus systems to large multi-modal transit agencies. Prior to joining URS, he served as CEO of Valley Metro Rail, Inc. in Phoenix, responsible for the design, construction and start-up in 2008 of the region’s $1.4 billion initial 20-mile LRT line that was completed on-time and on-budget. He has spent 28 years as the Chief Executive Officer/General Manager of five transit agencies in the U.S., Previously, he served as the CEO of MARTA in Atlanta – the 7th largest transit system in the U.S. During his tenure at MARTA, he led the efforts to prepare the agency for the demands of the 1996 summer Olympics, including moving more than 25 million passengers during a 17-day period on the MARTA system.

A former chairman of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), Mr. Simonetta also has held several positions on the APTA Executive Board. He has served as the Vice President for North America on the Executive Board of the International Association of Public Transport, a global public transit association, and has been the President of State Transit Associations in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Arizona.

Mr. Simonetta is the recipient of several prestigious APTA awards, including being named the 1997 Transit Manager of the Year. His agencies have been recognized by APTA as Best Overall Transit System and two-time winners for Best Hiring and Advancement of Minorities and Women.

Mr. Simonetta received a Bachelor of Arts degree in urban and regional planning from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Regional Planning from Pennsylvania State University. He also is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers veteran and served as a commissioned officer from 1966 to 1969.
