The project was part of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s (DTRA) Cooperative Threat Reduction Program. Albania represented the agency’s first effort to destroy chemical weapons. URS helped Albania become the first country in the world to destroy its stockpile of chemical weapons.

Among the many challenges, the project site was located in a remote and hazardous work area with limited access to transportation. To support both OSHA and European standards, a safety plan unprecedented in its scope was executed. In addition, URS project management led an international team of workers, including Americans, Germans, Albanians, Italians, Macedonians, Britons and Greeks.

Despite the obstacles, the project was an astounding success, with no safety incidents despite the adverse working environment. Agent processing, facility demolition and demobilization from Albania all were completed ahead of schedule.
