Since June 2010, URS has provided rig moving and heavy hauling services to major clients working in the Marcellus Shale and Pennsylvania area. Pennsylvania’s unique infrastructure includes power line lifts, high traffic, narrow roads, and tight corners—all of which must be taken into consideration in order to safely move rigs between locations on a daily basis.
A recent rig move for a major client required the lifting of more than 251 transmission lines and wires in order to allow the safe passage of six full loads.
Rig loads can be as wide as 16 feet, as high as 17 feet and, when loaded, can stretch up to 120 feet. Loads can weigh in at a gross weight of 200,000 pounds. On average, 40- 60 permits are required per rig move. In one instance, a single rig required more than 125 permits.
