Fifty years after streetcars went out of service in Minneapolis, the Hiawatha Light Rail has brought the first light rail line to the Twins Cities metropolitan area. URS was retained in 2000 to provide project management and design/
construction oversight services for the new line. Prior to that, URS led the preliminary engineering effort for the project.
URS also led a team of local architects, artists, landscape architects and engineers to create custom designs and aesthetic design guidelines for the 17 stations on the line. All the stations incorporate a variety of passenger amenities and public art representative of their surroundings and the communities they serve.
The complete $715 million starter system is Minnesota’s largest-ever public works project. The 12-mile project connects three of the Twin Cities most popular destinations - downtown Minneapolis, Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport and the Mall of America in Bloomington. The new rail line also is supporting the revival of the Minneapolis' Mississippi riverfront.
