Working on behalf of the U.S. Department of State, Overseas Buildings Operations, a URS team of architects, engineers and planners developed a prototype design for embassy office buildings and associated support facilities. It features a flexibility of design and engineering systems so it can be adapted to diverse climates, and different topographical and geologic conditions.
The prototype incorporates the latest in antiterrorist design principles to help protect these buildings against potential attacks on U.S. targets overseas. These include a blast-resistant hardened shell, safe havens and emergency alert systems. For security reasons, most antiterrorism-related design features are classified.
