URS’s comprehensive master plan for the Alexandria International Airport established an aggressive capital development and implementation program that maximizes commercial opportunities created by the facility’s location in the center of Louisiana and its multi-modal transportation links. Master planning involved analyzing land use, stormwater and financial feasibility scenarios in order to functionally organize the entire airport, including the existing two-runway airfield, a new passenger terminal and complete public and aviation support elements.
URS also designed a unique and compelling airport terminal by incorporating the rich local history of Alexandria through a historic railway terminal archetype that utilized local craftsmen and many architectural details found in Louisiana. Following September 11, 2001, the terminal design was revisited to incorporate the latest FAA and TSA mandated security guidelines. Parking was relocated to provide a 300’ clear zone, and the ticketing lobby was reconfigured to allow full outbound baggage screening.
