URS was a member of the project team selected by the government of Eritrea, East Africa, to design and supervise constuction of that country's first new water supply facility in more than 25 years. The facility provides much needed drinking water for Asmara, the country’s capital city.
The project included a 240-foot-high roller compacted concrete dam, a pump station capable of delivering 4,000 gallons per minute, and an 8.3-mile-long pipeline. URS was responsible for the dam engineering, design and construction observation. When Eritrea became an independent country in 1993 after 30 years of armed conflict, one of its primary needs was to rebuild its infrastructure. The most critical infrastructure need was reliable and safe drinking water for Asmara.
The project produced a state-of-the-art water supply facility that is equal to any facility that would be constructed in a more developed country. It satisfied the critical water supply needs of Eritrea's capital city, while at the same time providing many Eritreans with training in modern construction methods that will be put to use as the country continues to rebuild.
