URS has installed the SBS Injection™ technology at Cinergy’s Gibson Generating Station in southwestern Indiana. The proprietary technology for sulfur trioxide (SO3) control, offered exclusively by URS, is being installed on all five coal-fired units at the station.
The first commercial application of the technology was undertaken by URS in 2003 at a power plant in Pennsylvania. Four subsequent systems have been installed in Alabama, Indiana and Pennsylvania. The Gibson project is the sixth and largest application to date.
SBS Injection™ technology can remove more than 90 percent of sulfur trioxide while also eliminating the visible sulfuric acid plumes that are often produced by coal-fired power plants. In addition to removing SO3 and eliminating acid plumes, SBS Injection™ technology dramatically reduces corrosion of back-end equipment at power plants and can improve their energy efficiency.
