When a solution was needed to protect a new LNG terminal off the coast of Baja California in Mexico from the swells and storms of the Pacific Ocean, URS was selected as the lead designer for the construction of an offshore caisson breakwater. The breakwater needed to offer protection to the terminal and jetty and provide safe anchorage for tankers, as well as shield the grey whales whose migratory route was in the deep coastal waters.
URS provided detailed design, numerical modeling, and physical modeling and site supervision for certification that the completed structure conformed to the design’s intent. The result was the successful construction of one of the largest offshore breakwaters of its type ever built in the deepest water. The project has since received the Major Project of the Year award at the 2009/10 British Expertise International Awards and won the Infrastructure award in the Large Firm category at the United Kingdom’s Association for Consultancy and Engineering Excellence Awards 2010.
