The Mupane Gold Mine (MGM) located in Francistown, in the Northeast District of Botswana is nominally scheduled to close in 2011, depending on whether additional reserves are available within the pit. MGM recognizes the importance of mine closure planning during the early stages of the project, and therefore requires a plan that captures the key activities and associated costs for mine closure. MGM selected URS to provide an estimate of closure costs for the Mupane Gold Mine, so that adequate financial provisioning could be made for the decommissioning, final rehabilitation and closure of the mine. The key steps that were conducted to develop the preliminary closure cost estimate were to identify the facilities and components of the mine that needed to be included, describe the issues that influenced mine closure, conduct workshops with MGM personnel to estimate the costs of the mine closure activities, review the cost estimate and make recommendations to better define the closure scenario and hence increase the level of confidence in the closure costs.
