URS has an ongoing alliance with specialty chemicals and materials technology company Cytec Industries to provide engineering and project management services at its Fortier manufacturing facility in Westwego, Louisiana. This plant, which has a staff of 600, produces a variety of chemicals on an 800-acre site. URS provides a full range of project design and project management services and is responsible for all facilities including material handling systems.
One assignment was to provide project management, design, procurement and construction management services for Cytec’s $20 million melamine plant expansion. Melamine is a chemical used to make resins and in the tanning of leather. This project included the addition of a crystallizer, structural modifications, electrical and instrumentation system additions, new pumps, new heat exchangers, process review to size piping and heat transfer equipment.
