URS has a long-term alliance with DuPont to provide industrial maintenance, environmental, remediation and construction services at multiple DuPont facilities.
Our industrial-maintenance contracts include supplemental maintenance on plant facilities and construction of small capital projects.
Among the notable projects performed by URS was the application of new reactive barrier technology to clean up a landfill at a 120-acre Superfund site in Newport, Delaware. The project has effectively restored wetland areas and protected the environment.
Through cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, URS and DuPont were able to change the treatment technology for the landfill from in situ soil stabilization to the use of an in-ground permeable reactive barrier to filter the groundwater as it migrated away from the landfill toward the wetland and river. The innovation saved DuPont $13 million.
Through their efforts, the URS and DuPont project team won the prestigious DuPont engineering excellence award. Only a few of the most innovative and noteworthy projects from a worldwide pool of businesses are chosen annually to receive this award. It is one of the highest levels of recognition within DuPont and is widely respected in the greater engineering community.
