URS was selected by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Center of Expertise for Hazardous, Toxic & Radioactive Waste to perform an optimization modeling study that has the potential to save $10 million in groundwater remediation costs at the U.S. Navy’s former Blaine Ammunition Depot in Hastings, Nebraska.
Extensive groundwater contamination from hazardous chemicals is complicated by the seasonal influence of heavy irrigation pumping at many irrigation wells surrounding the site. A complex analysis of the groundwater system was needed to design a cost-effective extraction well layout and pumping schedule to clean up the site. URS is applying a formal optimization method to the site to further minimize the pumping rate of a proposed extraction system. The cutting-edge optimization modeling study places URS at the forefront of emerging groundwater modeling technologies.
