URS has been providing environmental services at the former McClellan Air Force Base, California, for the past 20 years. We have provided groundwater monitoring services that entire time. Other work includes landfill studies and operations of soil vapor and groundwater treatment systems.
One inactive disposal pit at the base had been used to dispose of industrial waste, radioactive materials, munitions and hazardous waste. When a drum containing radiological items was uncovered, URS installed a freestanding tent over a two-acre disposal pit to enable removal actions to proceed year round in a controlled environment. URS also assembled and operated on-site chemical and radiological laboratories to segregate the waste streams and characterize and dispose of the hazardous materials.
