Awarded Power Engineering magazine’s “2006 Nuclear Project of the Year”
SGT LLC, a URS/AREVA NP joint venture company, replaced two steam generators and a Reactor Vessel Closure Head (RVCH) at Entergy’s Arkansas Nuclear One (ANO) power plant in Russellville, Arkansas, with support from ANO Power Station. Owned and operated by Entergy Operations, Inc., the plant is located on a 1,100-acre site in Pope County and utilizes the nearby 34,300-acre Dardanelle Reservoir for its cooling system.
Several notable successes were achieved on this project: a new breaker-to-breaker outage record was achieved during the steam generator replacement outage period for Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) once-through steam generator designs; there were no lost-time accidents during this outage period; the fitout of both steam generators to the reactor coolant system (RCS) was achieved on the first attempt within tolerances; and the RCS piping system welds was completed with no rejects.
The project team implemented several innovative approaches to maintain the project’s aggressive schedule. The first was the use of the single-sided welding technique for the RCS pipe welds on the replacement steam generators at a cost savings of $500,000. The second was the implementation of a computed radiography process (aka digital radiography) to exam the welds. Both processes were first-of-a-kind applications on a U.S. nuclear plant.
