URS provided engineering, procurement, construction and startup services for the retrofit of wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system at Units, 1, 2 and 3 at Hatfield’s Ferry power station in Masontown, Pennsylvania, for Allegheny Energy. When completed the FGD system will remove more than 98 percent of the sulfur dioxide emissions from each unit.

For these three 575 MW units, URS will also supervise the modification of the forced draft boilers to a balanced draft design, make the required modification to the existing duct work and precipitator, and be responsible for the limestone delivery facilities and disposal of the gypsum by-product.

Highlights of the project include utilization of a modularized approach to duct work design, which improved the overall project schedule, and completion of one million work hours without a lost-time incident.
