SGT LLC, a URS/AREVA NP joint venture company, provided project management, planning, engineering, licensing and construction services for the replacement of four steam generators at Salem Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 2, in Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey, for Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG).
Highlights of the project include the use of a heavy component lift system with customized containerized winch system (CWS) to install the replacement components, speeding up the installation process and improving the outage schedule. Other highlights include the use of uniquely designed generator support blocks and the early installation of upper lateral supports on the replacement steam generators, which resulted in a reduced outage schedule. A highly sophisticated fitup solution, the use of a narrow groove weld joint design, implementation of computed radiographic testing on all welds and a rigorous welder training and proficiency testing program also contributed to the project’s successful completion.
The project was completed well ahead of schedule, beating SGT’s previous record for a steam generator replacement, before the deadline of the challenging outage schedule developed jointly by SGT and PSEG, and with almost 925,000 man hours with zero lost-time accidents.
