Awarded Power magazine’s “Plant of the Year, 2008”

URS provided overall construction management services—including overseeing multiple lump-sum construction subcontracts—for the new 500 MW coal-fired Weston Unit 4 near Wausau, Wisconsin, for Wisconsin Public Service Corporation. The new unit is located adjacent to Weston Unit 3 on the existing 345-acre power plant site in central Wisconsin.

Weston Unit 4 is a nominal supercritical pulverized coal-fired unit incorporating selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology and low nitrogen oxide burners for removal of nitrogen oxide and flue gas desulfurization technology for sulfur oxide removal. It uses clean coal technology, a high–efficiency boiler and low-sulfur (Powder River Basin) coal as fuel. The plant features state-of-the-art emission controls to minimize environmental and social impacts.

URS’ responsibility also included the conveying and storage systems for bottom ash, fly ash/FGD byproduct, coal and pebble lime, as well as the lime slurry preparation and feed system, and a railroad loop track to keep additional coal shipments off the main tracks.
