SERVICES PROVIDED
- Conceptual planning and design
URS provided conceptual planning and design for the proposed Joint-Agency Container Inspection Facility (JCIF). The high-tech facility was designed to inspect “high-risk” containers entering California’s San Pedro Harbor.
The design utilized the site of a former U.S. Customs building on Terminal Island. The buildings—owned by the Port—would be used by a diverse group of law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency. URS’ design offered a central location to resolve alarms requiring minimal container relocation without unduly impeding the flow of commerce or putting adjacent communities at risk.
The project included planning for the interface between all of the container terminals of the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, where this year 15.3 more than 18 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) will be handled.
