In November 2008, URS' Nuclear Management Partners consortium—comprised of URS, AMEC, and AREVA—took ownership of Sellafield Ltd., the entity responsible for the management and operation of the United Kingdom’s Sellafield Sites. The 5-year, $9.6 billion contract with the UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) encompasses the most intricate nuclear complex in the world. Included within the Sellafield Sites are the Sellafield nuclear complex in Cumbria in the north west of England, the Capenhurst enrichment plant in Cheshire, and engineering/design offices in Risley, near Manchester.

The Sellafield nuclear complex is a compact site containing more than 1,000 facilities with tasks associated with decommissioning the UK’s nuclear legacy. In addition, the work includes recycling used fuel from nuclear power stations, manufacturing mixed oxide fuel, managing and storing nuclear materials, and processing and storage of low-, intermediate-, and high-level nuclear wastes.

At the Capenhurst site, the URS-led team is decommissioning and dismantling the historic Uranium Enrichment Plant which ceased operation in 1982. This site also serves as a storage facility for Uranic materials. Depleated Uranium from fuel recycling at the Sellafield site and Uranium Hexafluoride from Urenco’s Capenhurst Ltd are shipped here for safe handling and storage.
