Cleveland Clinic Avon is a new healthcare campus on a 40-acre site situated on the western edge of Greater Cleveland and on the eastern side of Lorain County. The facility expands the Clinic’s range of services to the area and its commitment to these communities. Initially, the project is comprised of two major structures: a four-story Family Health Center of approximately 120,000 square feet, and a two-story ASC (Ambulatory Surgery Center) of 60,000 square feet. The ASC houses an outpatient surgery center, a free-standing Emergency Department with 24-hour service, and an Imaging suite. The two structures are linked by two-story atrium and centralized entrance that contains several small retail spaces on the First Floor and Conference rooms on the Second Floor.
The design of the buildings and the site had several unique challenges. The site and buildings had to be designed to allow for two expansions. It is anticipated that the ASC building will expand first followed by a 5-story hospital in the future. The site also has a large wetland area and zoning requirements for over 800 parking spaces in the first phase. In addition to these constraints, there is also a helipad on the property as well as areas designated for healing gardens and nature trails. URS integrated these requirements into a successful design that is organized around a strong central green and that presents a strong presence for travelers on the adjacent highway.
